Two house fires, two fevers, a broken arm and a facial laceration…~{Miami Family Photographer}-

We are in danger of having a whole generation that has no family albums, because people

just leave them on their computer, and then suddenly they will be deleted.”

– Martin Parr, Magnum Photographer

I read the quote up there a couple of days before I showed this family their gallery of photos at their ordering session. It rang so true to me at the time. But after talking with this family at their ordering session – and hearing from the dad, in particular – the meaning hit me even harder. More on this later…Let’s talk about those fevers, broken arms and stitches.

This session was re-scheduled 4 times. Maybe 5! We dealt with high fevers, a broken arm, and a facial laceration requiring multiple stitches. I reassured the mom that everything was fine, we’d make it happen, I would not go on maternity leave without photographing her family. But even I was starting to wonder if this were true. Finally, we managed to find a date were no one fell injured or ill, and “The Shoot That Almost Never Was” happened. As you can see, mom styled everyone perfectly. It’s not every guy who can pull off a pink guyaberra shirt, but this dad totally rocked it – and it helped that he had three beautiful girls surrounding him on all sides!

Now then, back to that quote up there about treasuring family photos. I arrived at this family’s home a few weeks after the shoot to show them their images. Both mom and dad luh-uh-ooooved what we got – yay! Then the dad told me something that sank my heart. Family photos have an extra-special meaning to him because he has almost none from his childhood – his family suffered not one, but two house fires when he was young and the majority of his family photos were destroyed. I immediately thought of the Martin Parr quote from the beginning of this post. Family photos are a treasure! Not only should we print them in albums for our children to leaf through (I loved to look through family albums as a kid), but they also need to live on our computers getting saved and re-saved on CDs, external hard drives and photo-sharing sites. In 2011, printing photos is easy (especially if you work with me!), and saving them digitally is a simple process. We owe it to our kids to both display their photos in print, and digitally keep them safe for the future.

With all of that said, let’s take a looksee at this lovely family. We caught some magic at their session!

The entire gang – so well put-together and gorgeous!

You need to see these children up close – OMG, they are so beautiful! The big sis…

Full of giggles and grins!

Okay. Please look at this baby. Seriously? Love her so much!

Have you seen a happier child?

The adorable sisters together

The girls have a few moments with their sweet, pretty mom – I love shooting parents with their children. And kids love to see themselves with mom and dad in print.

If you follow my blog at all you know that I’m a sucker for shots of a dad with his daughter. I get all melty every time. *sigh*

I learned a lot from this shoot. Not only the value of patience – even in the face of fevers, stitches and broken arms! – but also that unless we take those extra steps to protect our family images, they could be gone in the tragic blink of an eye. Thank you, M family. Thank you so, so much.
